HICKORY HILLS, IL — The armed robbery suspect who died last week in a shootout with Hickory Hills police ruled a suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner. Jonathan Ollry, 42, a non-compliant sex offender formerly of Hickory Hills, was found gravely injured in the alley behind the Pit Rib House and was later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

Hickory Hills police have released more information about the incident that unfolded last Thursday evening in the Hickory Palos Square Shopping Center parking lot on the southwest corner of 95th Street and Roberts Road. An 18-year-old man and his juvenile passenger were getting out of their car around 8:45 p.m., when a man, later identified as Ollry, approached them with a gun.

Police said Ollry held the man at gunpoint and demanded the key fob to his vehicle. The man handed over his key fob and immediately called 911. The alleged robber was unable to start the vehicle and fled when officers began arriving on the scene.

An officer spoke to the caller, who police said pointed out the suspect. As the officer tried to stop Ollry, police said he ran across 95th Street into the Speedway gas station parking lot. A second officer confronted Ollry and ordered him to stop, who responded by a pointing a handgun at the officers and firing several rounds, police said.

Although no officers were struck, at least a vehicle in the Speedway parking lot was hit. When the second officer returned fire, police said Ollry fled into an alley, where he was confronted by a third officer. As the officer exited his police vehicle ordering the suspect to drop his gun, police said Ollry shot himself in the head.

Ollry was added as a lifetime registrant to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry in 2023 after he was convicted of possession of child pornography in LaSalle County. His last known address was the 9400 block of South Torrence Avenue, Chicago. Authorities said Ollry failed to maintain accurate records required by law.

Illinois State Police continue their use of force investigation. Hickory Hills police continue to review police dash-cam and body-cam footage, as well as nearby businesses and citizen’s video.

“This remains an open and active investigation,” Hickory Hills police said in a statement.
