Local Boy Scouts Explore Ancient Egypt

Palos Heights Troop 729 was treated to a mock archaeological dig at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute.

Boy Scouts from Troop 729 in Palos Heights participated in a mock archaeological dig at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute.

The two hour program was designed to help scouts complete the archaeology merit badge.  Led by a PhD Egyptology candidate, the scouts completed a simulated dig on the Tell Edfu project site located in southern Egypt.  Scouts analyzed artifacts, reconstructed pottery and learned the importance of historic preservation.

They also participated in a scavenger hunt through the museum.  The Oriental Institute, founded in 1919, is a research organization and museum devoted to the study of the ancient Near East.  It is open daily to the public.
