While singing a solo or playing an instrument takes talent and skill, singing in harmony with another person or group elevates that experience.

A new member of the New Tradition Chorus, Brian Kachur, an experienced saxophone player presently seeking his doctorate at Northwestern University, shared his thoughts about a new instrument - his voice - and singing four-part harmony for the first time.

"My experience has been nothing short of amazing! From the first notes I sang with the group, I've been having so much fun. I'd heard about this genre of music in the documentary American Harmony, but it felt so cool to finally be experiencing it first-hand. I immediately cleared all Tuesday evenings going forward, and knew I needed to audition for the group. Now, singing with the chorus as a member, has been the highlight of my week."

Members of the New Tradition Chorus have been singing a cappella harmony together since 1982. Their two shows a year offer a wide variety of selections that span the decades, sung in the barbershop style, a purely American style that features close harmonies.

And now, the Chorus is offering a free, four-week course on Tuesdays October 29th to November 19th, 7 - 8pm at Glenview Community Church, 1000 Elm St., Glenview. The course will allow singers to dive into the world of four-part a cappella harmony and experience it first-hand. And, as an added bonus, there will be an opportunity to perform a couple of numbers on the New Tradition Holiday show, December 14 or 15 at 2:30pm at the Glenview Community Church.
