90 degrees and high humidity is not weather that runners typically enjoy during a marathon. However, on June 29th, for the 50 participants at the Park Ridge Lions Club β€œMicro-Marathon”, the 90 degree temperature and 89% humidity were just minor inconveniences. Everyone started the .262 mile event at 1:00 p.m.; by 1:15, all were enjoying beverages and appetizers inside the air conditioned patio of the Harp and Fiddle.

Each year, the Park Ridge Lions raises funds for important causes in and around the Park Ridge community. This year’s event raised more than $3,500 for individuals with disabilities at Avenues to Independence, a local organization providing residential, job placement, day training and other programs that assist persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Established in 1953, the Avenues programs have been supported by the Lions Club for all 71 years of its existence.

In 1947, the Park Ridge Lions Club started as a local civic organization with a mission to serve those with hearing and vision impairments. Today, in addition to Avenues, the Lions Club supports many disability, educational, disaster response and other important issues. The Lions also provides annual support for vision and hearing screenings, eyeglass and hearing aid collections and free or low cost eye/ear exams for people in need.
