Park Ridge city council considers traffic signal near Maine South High School

Crossing on busy Talcott Road is used by students

Park Ridge officials discussed the possibility of installing a traffic signal at a crossing on Talcott Road near Maine South High School, according to the Park Ridge Herald-Advocate.

In August, alderman viewed a video in which a student is nearly hit by a truck at the crossing. The city painted a crosswalk on Talcott Road in 2006 after a student was struck by a vehicle, and a crossing guard is stationed there when students are walking to and from school.

At a city council meeting on 14 November, Public Works Director Wayne Zingsheim said the state would require the city or the school district to pay for a $7,000 to $10,000 traffic study before a signal could be installed. He said that the state probably wouldn't approve a traffic signal at the crossing, since it is not a street intersection.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, 61 pedestrians were killed and 3,119 were injured in car accidents in Cook County in 2014.

The aldermen asked Zingsheim to talk with staff at Maine South to see if there would be any interest in co-funding the traffic study.
