Park Ridge’s Favorite Tearoom Prepares for a Paws-itively Unexpected Delivery

Sheila and Fred Duda's three-year-old rescue dog, Lucy, came with a surprise.

Park Ridge residents who frequent TeaLula know owner Sheila Duda as the face behind one of the community’s favorite spots for loose-leaf tea offerings and afternoon tea. But this fall, Sheila and her husband Fred have found themselves at the center of a very different kind of story — one involving an unexpected family addition.

The Dudas adopted Lucy, a three-year-old German Shepherd, just 55 days ago from a Grand Rapids family. They believed they were welcoming a young, energetic companion into their lives. What they didn’t know was that Lucy was carrying a much bigger surprise.

Lucy seemed healthy and happy, but it wasn’t until a few days before her spay appointment that they realized something was different. A visit to the veterinarian on September 26 confirmed the unexpected news: Lucy was pregnant, with at least seven puppies.

“The word is ‘shellshocked,’” Sheila said with a laugh. “We were not ready for this life change.”

Since then, Sheila and Fred have been preparing to help Lucy through the journey. By Sunday morning, September 28, Lucy went into labor. By September 30, Lucy had still not delivered, and the anticipation is growing, not just in the Duda household but also in the wider TeaLula community.

Through TeaLula’s social media channels, Sheila has been sharing updates on Lucy’s story. Customers and neighbors have responded with enthusiasm and encouragement, creating a circle of support as everyone awaits the arrival of the puppies.

“TeaLula has always been about community,” said Sheila. “Now that same community is helping us welcome Lucy’s new family, too.”
