Here are the top three stories today in Peoria:
- The Peoria City Council is reviewing a CO2 pipeline proposal that would potentially run right under the north and south valleys and near downtown. Councilman Chuck Grayeb said of the proposed project, “This is an unacceptable risk so close to our downtown, our southern valley, and our northern valley, highly populated areas." The pipeline is fully supported by the state of Illinois and the federal government and would help the Biden Administration meet its goal of making the U.S. carbon neutral by 2025. The pipeline will continue to be researched and discussed before any decision will be made. (Subscription: Peoria Journal Star)
- The trial for a Peoria man accused of killing his girlfriend is set for May 9. Tahir Goodman, Jr. is facing trial for allegedly strangling his girlfriend to death and subsequently setting her house on fire. During his bond hearing a day after Hobbs was found, Peoria County Prosecutors said that Goodman and Hobbs were reportedly wrestling when he put his forearm on her neck and she started “breathing funny.” Goodman has been in custody since Dec. 21, 2021, and will be facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated arson. - Peoria High School was one of several schools around Illinois that were subjected to swatting incidents on Wednesday. As of 3:00 p.m., 21 calls had been made against schools around the state threatening active shooter situations or bombings. The Illinois State Police are actively investigating the fake calls, and officials said they haven't located any credible threats as a result of the calls. Swatting refers to illegal calls that make claims about fake emergency threats, such as shootings or bombings. (Peoria Public Radio)
