'Unprovoked' Pit Bull Attack Hospitalizes 4, Dog Shot By Police

Police said four people were transported to a nearby hospital after a Saturday night dog attack. Police also said the dog was shot.

UPDATE: This story was updated on 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, with more information from the Plainfield Police Department.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Four people, including a man who suffered serious injuries to his arms, were transported to area hospitals, Saturday night after a dog attack in Plainfield's Winding Creek subdivision. Plainfield Fire Chief Jon Stratton said the victims had multiple dog bites.

The incident happened at a home in the 22000 block of Judith Drive. The Plainfield Police Department first arrived at the scene around 9:15 p.m., according to a Sunday morning police press release on the incident, after getting a report of a dog bite. Inside the home, they found a male pit bull acting aggressively. The victims were located on the second floor.

One victim, a 25-year-old man, suffered severe injuries to his arms and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet. He has since been moved to Loyola Hospital in Maywood for further treatment. The other three victims, a 52-year-old woman, 25-year-old woman and 19-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and were treated and released at a nearby hospital.

Stratton said a helicopter was initially called to the scene to transport one of the victims but was cancelled, and all victims were taken to the hospital via ambulance.

The incident was contained to one home; the pit bull responsible for the attack reportedly belonged to the victims. Police said their initial investigation indicates the attack was unprovoked and the dog "attacked for an unknown reason."

Plainfield Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said the pit bull was shot after it proved aggressive and officers on the scene were unable to gain full control of it.

The incident is still under investigation by the Plainfield Police Department and Will County Animal Control.

Editor's note: Initial indications from police and fire officials were that three people were injured. On Sunday morning, police said a total of four people were hurt in the incident.
