Coronavirus Cases Doubled In Plainfield D202 Over Past Week

PLAINFIELD, IL — Coronavirus cases are continuing to grow within the Plainfield School District 202, which experienced more than a 100 percent increase in cases over the past one week.

As of Friday, 125 employees and students have tested positive since Aug. 10. The new cases last week numbered 49, compared to 24 the week before, according to the district's coronavirus dashboard.

As of Friday, 233 students and staff members in the district had direct exposure to COVID-19 in the last week, which means being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes, living in the same household as someone with COVID-19, or having extended exposure over a period of time with someone with COVID-19.

The district had planned to bring back students to school in groups, but Superintendent Lane Abrell announced Monday that due to the coronavirus surge in Will County, the schools will be extending the "adaptive pause" indefinitely.

About 300 multi-needs special education students returned to school on Oct.26, and a 100 more opted to continue with remote learning. They were the first group of students to return and will continue to attend in-person classes because they need direct attention and support more than other students.
