YORKVILLE, IL — Contractors discovered human remains while fixing existing water pipes Wednesday in the 200 block of Park Street, according to Yorkville police.

Crews were digging a trench to complete the repairs when they hit the bones, prompting a response from the Yorkville Police Department and Kendall County Coroner's Office, who made a preliminary determination that the remains were human.

With the help of the Kendall County Historical Society, law enforcement officials said they learned that the site was occupied by a cemetery in the 1840s and 1850s.

Around the turn of the century, the headstones from the site were relocated to Elmwood Cemetery in Yorkville, but the disposition of the remains was not mentioned in the available information, according to a news release.

Staff from the Yorkville Police Department, Kendall County Coroner's Office and Illinois State Police's forensic team are working to examine the disturbed ground to "provide proper and respectful treatment of the early Kendall County resident who was inadvertently disturbed," officials said.
