PLAINFIELD, IL — A welfare check on June 5 revealed a Plainfield-area man passed out in his car in the parking lot of a Plainfield convenience store, with loose cannabis visible to police through the window, officials said.

Plainfield officers were dispatched at 11:36 p.m. to the 7-Eleven on South Route 59 after the caller said a man, later identified as Jordan G. Thurston, 29, was asleep in a white Volkswagen Jetta with a rear window rolled down.

Thurston, of the 2500 block of Ruth Fitzgerald Drive, slumped over in the driver's seat, and it took officers "several attempts" to wake him up as he appeared under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.

Suspected cannabis was also "within plain view" on the passenger seat, Cmdr. Anthony Novak said of the incident, which was included on Tuesday's blotter.

Officers subsequently searched Thurston and found a pill bottle containing several pills that appeared to be Xanax prescribed to someone else.

After Thurston was placed under arrest on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, police said officers searched the Jetta and found several other loose pills they believed to be Xanax, another pill bottle with no label suspected to contain methamphetamine, and multiple bags of suspected cannabis.

As officers attempted to place Jordan in the squad car, Novak said he refused to obey, and the Plainfield Fire Protection District was called to evaluate him.

Following his evaluation, Thurston was taken to the Plainfield Police Department for processing and charged with the following:

  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession with the intent to manufacture/deliver a controlled substance
  • Resisting or obstructing a peace officer
  • Possession of cannabis

Thurston was issued citations and a notice to appear before he was released from custody.
