More New Coronavirus Cases In D202 Schools Last Week

As of Friday, 52 employees and students have tested positive since Aug. 10.

PLAINFIELD, IL — More students and staff members tested positive for the coronavirus last week than they did the week before in Plainfield School District 202, according to the latest numbers.

As of Friday, 52 employees and students have tested positive since Aug. 10. The new cases last week numbered 11, compared to seven the week before, according to the district.

As of Friday, 41 students and staff members in the district had direct exposure to COVID-19 in the last week, which means being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes, living in the same household as someone with COVID-19, or having extended exposure over a period of time with someone with COVID-19.

This comes after Superintendent Lane Abrell announced Thursday that students should be prepared to go back to remote learning once they return for in-person classes as coronavirus numbers in the region continue to move in the wrong direction.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced earlier last week that new restrictions will be imposed on Region 7 (Will and Kankakee) after positivity rates in those two regions eclipsed 8 percent for three straight days.

As per the district's Return '20 plan, multi-needs special education students are getting back to in-person learning Monday, followed by Prekindergarten and kindergarten students on Nov. 5.

Abrell said the district is continuing to monitor the coronavirus metrics while balancing the needs of the students.
