Pet, Nanny Escape House Fire In Plainfield, Home Uninhabitable

The family's nanny was getting ready to leave when she noticed the fire, officials said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A Plainfield home was left uninhabitable due to smoke damage, but the family's nanny and pet escaped unscathed, fire officials said. Plainfield Fire Chief Jon Stratton said firefighters responded to a home in the 24000 block of Deer Creek Court at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to find flames showing from the exterior of the home.

Stratton said the homeowners' nanny was getting ready to leave when she noticed the fire and called for help. She was able to get out of the home, along with the family pet. Stratton said the parents and four children were not at home at the time of the fire.

A preliminary investigation shows a dehumidifier may have ignited stored items in the home's basement.

Stratton said the fire caused pipes in the home to burst, which helped contain the flames until firefighters arrived.

The home was rendered temporarily uninhabitable by smoke damage, Stratton said.
