Plainfield Named To Top 50 Safest Illinois Communities

Plainfield is the 32nd safest community in Illinois, according to a new study.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield is among the top 50 safest communities in Illinois, according to a new study. The village came in as 32nd safest community in the state.

The new study comes from Security Baron, which looked at 2016 and 2017 FBI crime statistics to determine which Illinois communities are the most crime-free. Security Baron tracked statistics like citizen-to-officer ratio, property crime, violent crime and how each of those crime categories have trended in recent years.

Using those measures, Plainfield was given a safety score of 86.07.

That's not far off from No. 1-ranked Campton Hills, a small community in
the Northwest Suburbs that came in with a score of 91.08. (Mount
Prospect is last on the list with a safety score of 84.83.)

With a population of over 43,000, Plainfield has a citizen-to-officer ratio of 1.22. It has a violent crime rate of 1.27 per 1,000 residents, and it has property crime rate of 7.53 per 1,000 residents, according to Security Baron.

Plainfield's property crime rate is trending downward, but the violent crime rate tracked up by 0.41 percent, Security Baron reports. Nationally, there is an average violent crime rate of 4.39/1,000 people and an average property crime rate of 20.11/1,000 people.

Plainfield has a median income of $121,746, which is considerably higher than the other communities ranked Nos. 30-39 on Security Baron's list.
