PLAINFIELD, IL — A resident of Ciel at Plainfield was assaulted Saturday by an employee, who has since been fired and charged with aggravated battery, according to Plainfield police.

The surveillance camera system, equipped with fall detection, alerted staff to investigate a fall around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Police were called to the assisted living center, 12446 S Van Dyke Road, where they spoke with the supervisor, who said she investigated the video footage and saw an altercation between a patient and another employee. The staff member, later identified as 66-year-old Thomas Agyemang, was in the patient's room when an argument began. It turned physical when Agyemang slapped the patient several times, Cmdr. Anthony Novak told Patch.

As Agyemang left the room, the patient got up from his bed and began to walk outside the room before Agyemang reentered and slapped the patient, who then fell, Novak said.

Officers reviewed the video surveillance and determined there was "sufficient evidence" to charge Agyemang, of the 8100 block of Waterbury Court in Woodridge, with aggravated battery of a person 60 years or older, a felony.

Around 9:49 p.m. Sunday, Agyemang returned to work when he was informed that his employment was terminated. Police were called back, as they requested during the first response, and placed Agyemang under arrest.

Agyemang was transported to the Plainfield Police Department for processing and was released with a notice to appear July 31 at the Will County Courthouse. He was also issued a trespass warning for Ciel, according to Novak.
