Plainfield Police Issue 232 Seatbelt Citations During July Fourth

The PD joined more than 200 state and local law enforcement agencies to get drunk and drugged drivers off the roads.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department issued 232 seat belt citations during the recent July Fourth Click It or Ticket safety campaign.

A release from the PD said that officers joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies to get drunk and drugged drivers off the roads and encourage seat belt use.

The department was asking residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely.

According to Illinois Department of Transportation data, there were 14 alcohol-related fatal crashes between 2012-2016, and 16 alcohol-related fatalities during the same period. These are crashes that occurred from 6:00 p.m. on the day before the first full day of the holiday period to 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the holiday period. In all these cases, at least one driver tested positive for alcohol.

The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.

The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide program.
