PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department will take a zero-tolerance approach to speeding on Wednesday, which happens to be "Speed Awareness Day," officials said Tuesday.

Police will partner with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police as well as more than 300 local law enforcement agencies to increase patrols throughout the day, targeting speeding and other traffic violations. The day-long speed blitz will occur amid another statewide campaign from July 8-31 to reduce speeding.

"Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk," Sgt. Dino Dabezic said in a statement. "It reduces the driver's ability to steer safely around other vehicles, increases stopping distance, and can lead to more severe injuries if you are involved in a crash. We urge drivers to slow down and make the safe choice."
