PLAINFIELD, IL — A 16-year-old boy from Plainfield was fatally shot by Chicago police early Sunday in Pilsen, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times.

Police said Robbery Task Force officers heard gunshots at 1:16 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue and encountered "armed offenders," at which point two police fired their weapons, striking one, later identified as Alex Angel Cortez, the Cook County Medical Examiner said.

After responding officers rendered aid, the teen was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.
