PLAINFIELD, IL — A Chicago man speeding through Plainfield on July 4 was carrying a loaded gun and ammunition without a concealed carry license, police say officers discovered in a traffic stop.

An officer pulled over a Dodge Dart around 8:31 p.m. near 135th Street and Savannah Drive for speeding. As he spoke to the driver, identified as Larry F. Sims, the officer reported he "smelled the odor of burnt cannabis emitting from inside the vehicle," Cmdr. Anthony Novak told Patch. Sims admitted to having smoked cannabis before being pulled over.

The officer searched the car and found a small amount of cannabis, a loaded firearm, a loaded magazine with ammunition, and a cup containing an alcoholic beverage, according to Novak.
