Teen, Dog Escape As Fire Destroys Garage, Damages Home

Plainfield firefighters responded to a fire in the 15600 block of Benson Avenue Tuesday evening.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A teenage boy and his dog were able to escape unhurt after a fire broke out in a garage and spread to the exterior of a home in the 15600 block of Benson Avenue, Plainfield Fire Chief Jon Stratton told Patch. Firefighters responded to the fire at around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Stratton said the detached garage was totaled in the blaze, which caused an estimated $60,000 in damage. The fire also spread to the exterior of the home but did not reach the interior, Stratton said.

No vehicles were in the garage, but Stratton said a lawn mower and other supplies were also destroyed in the fire.

Three other family members were not in the home at the time of the fire, Stratton said.

Stratton said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, and the cause is under investigation.
