Teens Flash Apparent Gun In Plainfield Neighborhood: Police

Police took four juveniles into custody on Tuesday after reportedly flashing a gun — possibly a fake — near the Indian Oaks subdivision.

PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department said Tuesday that four juveniles were taken into custody after a bout of reckless driving and flashing what might have been a gun to local residents. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Plainfield PD Public Information Officer Anthony Novak said, on the 16000 block of Dan O'Connell Drive.

"There was a reckless driving/person with a gun call," Novak said, "and... the complainant indicates that they observed a vehicle driving recklessly, speeding through the subdivision."

Novak further said that when a local resident went up to confront the driver of the vehicle — a Mercedes — the front-seat passenger pulled out what appeared to be a Glock handgun, before the car sped away.

Half an hour later, another officer on patrol in the Indian Oaks subdivision saw a vehicle matching the description given of the reckless drivers and stopped them to investigate their vehicle.

"[The officer] identifies a vehicle matching that description with multiple occupants inside of it, so an investigative stop is conducted," Novak said.

According to the officer who made the stop, all occupants of the car were juveniles and were detained. After establishing that they were the same individuals from the earlier report, the driver of the vehicle was charged with driving without a driver's license, and the passenger was charged with disorderly conduct. The other two passengers in the car were released without charges.

Despite reports of a handgun being flashed, no weapon was recovered from the car.

"Whether or not it was a real gun or an airsoft gun, we don't know because no gun was recovered," Novak said.
