Woman, Baby Escape Burning Home Before It Collapses

"The Lockport Fire District would like to emphasize how this fire stresses the importance of working smoke detectors," officials said.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Fire officials say a two-story, single-family house burned on Covington Drive in the Lakewood Falls subdivision of unincorporated Lockwood Sunday night. Fire fighters responded just after 11 p.m. and brought the fire under control about 30 minutes later.

One woman and an infant were home asleep when the fire started. Officials say smoke detectors woke her up, likely saving her life, and she was able to get herself and the infant out of the house before the interior collapsed a short time later. Neither the woman or the infant were injured and the Red Cross was called in for assistance.

"The Lockport Fire District would like to emphasize how this fire stresses the importance of working smoke detectors," officials said in a news release. "You should have a working smoke detector in every bedroom and on every level of your home, including the basement."
