11 Distracted Driving Citations During July Fourth: Police

ROMEOVILLE, IL — The Romeoville Police Department issued 19 seat belt citations and 11 distracted driving citations during the recent July Fourth Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket safety campaigns.
A release from the PD said that officers joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use. The department was asking residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely.
According to Illinois Department of Transportation data, there were 14 alcohol-related fatal crashes between 2012-2016, and 16 alcohol-related fatalities during the same period. These are crashes that occurred from 6:00 p.m. on the day before the first full day of the holiday period to 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the holiday period. In all these cases, at least one driver tested positive for alcohol.

The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.
The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide programs.
