Electric Bike Manufacturer To Open Facility In Romeoville

The company signed a lease for a 120,000-square-foot space where it will handle assembly and distribution of its bikes, officials said.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — An electric bike manufacturer is moving to Romeoville, officials announced Friday.

Metalrays signed a lease on a 120,000-square-foot space on Southcreek Parkway where it will operate a facility that handles assembly and distribution of its bikes. Village officials said the space is expected to be operational at the end of June.

The e-bike company, which opened in 2021, also operates other warehouses in Illinois, California, Alabama, Delaware and Maryland.

"As green energy moves to the forefront, we will be seeing more and more businesses operating in the marketplace," Mayor John Noak said in a statement. "We are excited Romeoville can be home to another one of these businesses and look forward to the jobs they will bring to our community."

Romeoville is home to more than 35 miles of bike paths. Upgrades coming to 135th Street will pave the way for bike lanes to further the village's connection.

Current village ordinances mandate that the only e-bikes that can use local paths must be Class 1— ones that require the bicyclist to pedal to move — with a maximum speed of 20 mph.
