Frog Lesson: King 5th-Graders Sure to Remember Hands-On Experience
Irene King Elementary School students search for "various organs" during a laboratory examination of frogs in teacher Fred Felix's classroom.

Things were really hopping Friday afternoon in Fred Felix’ 5th grade classroom at Irene King Elementary School in Romeoville.
No, not literally hopping. But Felix’ 5th graders did learn a lot about frogs thanks a carefully planned and executed scientific observation of the dissected animals.
“They’ll remember this unique hands-on experience for sure,” said Felix, who cut the half dozen laboratory frogs himself before class and then took students through a search for various organs “to determine their relative locations” in a frog’s body.

Once the search was completed, the class invited King’s two other 5th grade sections into the room and proceeded to “educate” their classmates on everything that makes a frog tick.
This is the second year Felix classes have gone through the “observe and identify” science lesson.
