The PD's First Wellness Dog Will Be A 'Safe Haven' For Victims
Eleven-week-old bernedoodle, Lola Haven, will provide officers and victims at the Romeoville PD with an opportunity "to smile."

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Eminent Czech author, Milan Kundera, wrote: "Dogs are our link to paradise," and to provide such unadulterated joy to the officers as well as victims of severe trauma, the Romeoville Police Department has inducted a new four-legged member to its team.
Eleven-weeks-old bernedoodle, Lola Haven, first set her paws in the building Wednesday, and "instantly became the most beloved member of the PD," said Chief Kenneth Kroll.
Lola is the Romeoville police's first official wellness dog. Kroll said he had been mulling over the idea for years, but was not in a position to implement it. After his recent promotion to the role of chief, he knew it was the right time to introduce a furry ally to the community.

"Lola provides an opportunity for people to smile," he said. "She helps place an officer in a positive state of mind. She will also be available to socialize with kids and adults who are here at the station to provide comfort and take their minds off situations that might be outside the norm."
With the help of the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen — a program that encourages responsible dog ownership — Lola will eventually become a certified comfort dog. Kroll said she has a sweet disposition and each time she is with a victim, she will be escorted by an officer to ensure her safety.

Since the Romeoville PD is a 24/7 operation, someone will always be available to take care of Lola.
"She will never be alone," Kroll said. "We also have the best 'backyard' in Illinois for a dog. The PD has a huge front lawn, a big backyard that adjoins the Will County Forest Preserve, and she’s even got her very own walking path that she’s willing to share with joggers, bicycles and other dogs.
He said Lola has an entire team of officers at her service. Initially he expected to need five people, one person from each platoon, but as soon as the call for volunteers was put out, several of the PD members offered their help.
"Lola’s got people!" he said.
Longtime residents the Callaghan-Vinckus family made a hefty donation, which will go toward her bed, toys, leash, harness and vet expenses. She is going to be "very well-equipped thanks to their generosity," Kroll said.
Not only is Lola a special dog, but her unique name is steeped in pride and history. A long list of suggestions including Donut and Missy (short for misdemeanor) had been provided by the department, but two names gained more traction.
Lola was chosen to honor Aurora "Lola" Green Baldwin, who was sworn in as one of the first policewomen of the United States in 1908, and Haven was short for safe haven.
"This dog will be a safe haven for officers, victims and guests," Kroll said. "Lola’s here to be loved, brighten people’s moods, and provide emotional support for employees and victims having what could be their worst day ever. So instead of choosing one, our bernedoodle got a first and last name."
