Romeoville Resident Named Winner In Will Co. Earth Day Raffle

ROMEOVILLE, IL — A Romeoville resident is among three winners named by the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division 50th Anniversary Earth Day Passport event. Lisa Kazmi of Romeoville won a $20 gift certificate to Milette’s Cakes of Plainfield, a $25 gift card to Jitters in Joliet and several sustainability items from the Land Use Department.

The other winners were Brigette Garay of Joliet, who won a $50 gift card to Heroes West in Joliet, and Dawn Hensen-Leonard of Lockport who took home $25 gift cards to Peter Rubi of Plainfield and Nancy’s Pizza, which has multiple locations.

The participants were required to complete a list of opportunities to participate in "green"activities in Will County. This started on March 14 and will continue till Sept. 15.

To enter the raffle, participants need to log into the website and check off environmental activities as they are completed. Once they complete at least 15 activities, they are automatically entered into all remaining raffles. Drawings are held every 50 days from program start date until it closes. The next one will be on Aug. 8.

Each raffle prize is worth at least $50 in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The education- and activity-based event is intended to encourage everyone to find ways to help the environment, according to Will County Executive Denise Winfrey.

Some tasks on the Passport include:

  • Plant a vegetable garden.
  • Plant native flowering plants to help attract pollinators in your yard or in a container to support our birds, bees and beneficial insects.
  • Plant native bushes, a tree or both to reduce mowing, increase shade on your home (south side of the house) or create a wind break (north side of the house) with evergreens.
  • Bring an electronic item to one of the weekday Electronic Recycling Collections.
  • Investigate composting and buy a composting bin for your kitchen scraps.
  • Reduce emissions by carpooling to work or riding your bicycle for an errand.
  • Take plastic bags and wrap to a grocery store for recycling.
  • Give up plastic bottles and use a durable, washable, refillable bottle for water.

Prizes have been donated by a variety of area businesses and nonprofits. Top prize is a refurbished fifth generation iPad valued at $400 from A-Team Recyclers, which will be awarded in September as part of the final round of prizes.
