SHOREWOOD, IL — This week, the village of Shorewood was dealt an unexpected blow. As Patch broke the news, Savarino's Pizza is calling it quits, with its last day of business on June 1 after 13 years of business in Shorewood. Savarino's had a great reputation in the Shorewood area not only for its pizza but for its tasty broasted chicken.

The upcoming loss of Savarino's Pizza will leave Shorewood's Hammel Creek Commons with yet another vacancy. For several years, you would not see any vacancies at Hammel Creek, maybe one at the most. At present, the giant business sign along Route 52 and Jefferson Street shows three empty storefronts. The loss of Savarino's will make it four vacancies.

On the positive side, the businesses that remain at Hammel Creek have strong followers and generate a lot of traffic to the business center, restaurants and bars like Will County Brewing, Happy Place Cafe Family Restaurant and Mauve Nosh & Libations.

One of the last businesses that failed to make it was the storefront next door to Savarino's, Australian Sun Tanning. Hammel Creek Commons is managed by the Caton Commercial Real Estate Group.

On Thursday, Joliet Patch interviewed Natalie Engel, director of economic development for Shorewood. She told Patch that the village was surprised by the announcement of Savarino's Pizza leaving, but she is optimistic that the restaurant won't sit empty for very long.

She is hopeful that Shorewood can attract a nice sit-down restaurant that would be a great destination for events such as birthday parties. In 2023, Shorewood landed the Troy Johnson's West 52 BBQ to the fill the vacancy of the original Casa Maya location, filling a void in the community because Shorewood did not have a high-quality BBQ restaurant at that time, Engel explained.

Despite the loss of Savarino's, Shorewood still has several pizza restaurants such as Rosati's Pizza takeout at 805 W. Jefferson Street, Carson's Corner Pizzeria And More at the corner of Route 59 and Cottage Street, Maciano's Pizza & Pastaria and Giordano's, both along the Route 59 corridor. There's a takeout Pizza For U at the Anderson's Crossing at Route 59 and Route 52.
