SHOREWOOD, IL — A law firm in Chicago on West Washington Street has filed a civil lawsuit at the Will County Courthouse on behalf of Diana Owens, a woman who visited the Shorewood Starbucks at the Target store on Oct. 12, 2023. Owens is suing both Target and the Starbucks Coffee Company, alleging negligence and premises liability.

The case has been assigned to Will County Judge John Anderson in Courtroom 905.

"Diana Owens sustained severe and permanent injuries, physical and mental pain and suffering, loss of normal life, disfigurement, impairment of the ability to earn money in the future, increased risk of future injury and was obligated to spend large sums of money for medical care and attention and was otherwise deprived of great gains which she would have made and acquired as a result of said injuries," noted her lawyers from Chicago's Gordon, Gordon & Centracchio personal injury law firm.

According to her lawsuit, Owens is seeking a judgment against Target and Starbucks Coffee in excess of $50,000 plus the costs for bringing the lawsuit forward. The Target store is at 1111 Brook Forest Avenue and inside the Target is a Starbucks Coffee shop where patrons can purchase Starbucks coffee, items and drinks.

The plaintiffs contend that Target and Starbucks, through their employees, provided the beverage services at the coffee shop and Diana Owens was lawfully on the property last Oct. 12 "when she was caused to slip and fall by liquid on the floor ... There were no signs or warnings alerting patrons of the coffee shop or the plaintiff ... that there was liquid on the floor," her lawsuit reflected.
