Chicago Man Crashes Into Illinois State Police Squad Car In Skokie

The early morning Halloween crash was the 18th crash involving drivers failing to move over for state police squad cars so far this year.

SKOKIE, IL — An unlicensed driver from Chicago crashed into an Illinois State Trooper's squad car on the Edens Expressway in Skokie early Tuesday, according to state police.

Around 3 a.m., the motorist crashed a Toyota Matrix into a marked SUV with its emergency lights on and flares behind it in the left southbound lane of Interstate 94, just south of Old Orchard Road, state police said.

The trooper, who was uninjured, was outside of the squad car at the time of the crash dealing with an earlier weather related crash after a driver struck the concrete center median.

Fadil Sanni, the 28-year-old driver of the Toyota, was charged with a violation of Scott's Law, also known as the "move over law," for improper passing of an emergency vehicle, as well as failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no valid driver's license, according to ISP.

State police reported that Sanni told officers that he had lost control of his car after striking a patch of black ice.

During the first 10 months of 2023, there have been 19 crashes involving state police and Scott's Law violations. Last year, eight troopers were injured in 23 crashes.

If a violation of Scott's Law results in an injury to another person, the driver is subject to a mandatory license suspension.
