Lincolnwood Teachers' Association Statement of Student and Family Safety
Families need to know they can count on their school districts for support.
We write today to affirm that student safety, family dignity, and the right to learn without fear are core union values. We recognize that recent reports of federal immigration enforcement activity have stirred deep anxiety and uncertainty among many families, especially within immigrant communities. We stand in solidarity with all students and their families, regardless of immigration status.
Our Commitments
- We uphold schools as safe havens. We demand that schools remain sanctuary spaces where students feel protected and able to engage in learning without threat.
- We reject disclosure of immigration status. We join in opposing any requests to ask families about their immigration status, or to disclose such information (unless compelled by lawful court order). Schools must not become enforcers.
- We resist disruption of the learning environment. Schools should not permit ICE or other federal agents to interrupt classes or school functions, unless legally compelled by proper judicial warrant.
- We support rights, education, and resource access. Students, families, and staff deserve clear, accurate information about their legal rights, and access to trusted legal and community resources such as hotlines, immigrant support organizations, and legal clinics.
- We demand equitable, inclusive treatment. All students must have full access to education, guidance, and support services, even in times of crisis.
What We Urge of Districts & Administrators
- Issue a clear policy affirming noncooperation with ICE (absent warrant), protection of private records, and declaring schools “safe zones.”
- Train staff in understanding student rights, trauma awareness, and appropriate responses.
- Designate safe spaces on campus for students who may feel vulnerable, especially during dismissal or transitions.
- Coordinate with community organizations to offer on-site or referred support.
- Communicate transparently to keep students, families, and staff informed about known risks, procedures, and supports in place.
Our Pledge as Union Members
- We will advocate publicly and through collective bargaining for protections that secure immigrant and marginalized students.
- We will refuse to cooperate in activities that compromise student safety or dignity, consistent with legal obligations.
- We will stand with families in listening, referring resources, and helping connect them to legal and social support.
In times of fear and uncertainty, our collective resolve must be unwavering. Schools exist to teach, nurture, and unite communities. We will continue to fight so that every student knows they belong here.
