Muffins Sold At Skokie Walmart, 7-Elevens Recalled Over Listeria

SKOKIE, IL — Several kinds of muffins sold at 7-Elevens and Walmart in Skokie have been recalled in response to the discovery that they may have been contaminated with listeria.

Give and Go Prepared Foods, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Mondelez International, issued a voluntary recall Tuesday affecting 26 different kinds of ready-to-eat muffins sold at 7-Eleven, Stop & Shop, Walmart or Sam's Club.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Similar to other foodborne illnesses, symptoms of listeriosis include fever and diarrhea. Other symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches.

"We became aware of this issue as part of our environmental monitoring program," company officials said, in an announcement shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "To date, we have received no reports of illness related to this issue and are taking this action out of an abundance of caution.

UPC codes, sell-by dates and photos of the affected products can be found on the FDA’s website.

Consumers who have any of the affected muffins should immediately dispose of the products and not eat them, according to food safety regulators. They should also make a note of the product’s lot code on the product label.
