📰 News we're reading

• Skokie PD Warns Drivers To Stay Sober This Holiday Season (patch.com) — Skokie police are increasing patrols from Dec. 12 to Jan. 5 as part of statewide campaigns targeting drunk, drug-impaired, unbelted, speeding, and distracted drivers during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Residents are urged to plan sober rides, use transit or ride-shares, and report impaired drivers to help keep local roads safe.

• Evanston/Skokie D65 mulls pursuing funds from indicted ex-superintendent Devon Horton (chicagotribune.com) — Evanston/Skokie District 65 is weighing whether to hire a collections firm to recover more than $7,500 it says is still owed by former superintendent Devon Horton, while also launching a forensic audit of district finances from 2021–2024. The board is simultaneously trying to fill a vacant seat that has stalled key budget and school-closure decisions, directly affecting Skokie families’ schools and services.

• Several families displaced but no injuries reported after fire ravages Niles apartment building (chicagotribune.com) — Skokie firefighters helped Niles crews battle a major overnight apartment fire on Dempster Street that left at least four families displaced but caused no reported injuries. The building was declared uninhabitable, and Niles officials are working with the Red Cross while investigators continue to probe the cause. Skokie’s role came through regional mutual aid support.
