Skokie Launches Solar Program To Save Residents Money On Electricity

Skokie residents who subscribe to a local solar project could get up to two free months of electricity each year.

SKOKIE, IL — A new community program launched Monday aims to save Skokie residents money on their electricity bills.

The Skokie Community Solar program allows ComEd customers, including renters, homeowners and business owners, to subscribe to a local solar project and receive monthly bill credits worth up to 15 percent of their bill. This could be the equivalent of receiving two months of free electricity a year.

“The Skokie Community Solar program reflects the Village’s strong commitment to providing affordable, inclusive access to clean energy while advancing our long-term sustainability goals,” said Mayor Ann Tennes. “It’s a win for our environment and a win for our community.”

Residents can enroll in the program for free, with no installation needed. Each month, participants will receive two monthly bills:

  • One ComEd bill, reduced by the value of their solar credits
  • One bill from Nexamp for the cost of those credits at a 15 percent discount

For example, if a resident's solar credits are worth $100 and the discount is 15 percent, the ComEd bill would be reduced by $100 and the Nexamp bill would be $85.

ComEd will still provide electricity villagewide and will respond to power outages and other issues. People enrolled in Skokie's electric aggregation program are also eligible to participate in the program.

Village officials will host public information sessions to share details about the new program at the Skokie Public Library on Oct 13 at 1 p.m. and on Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. More information is available on Skokie's solar energy webpage.
