Skokie Police Upping DUI, Seat Belt Enforcement During Thanksgiving Holiday
From Nov. 21 to Dec. 2, Skokie police will be on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers.
SKOKIE, IL — In preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday this year, law enforcement in Skokie are upping patrols to catch impaired and distracted drivers on roads.
"Thanksgiving brings more vehicles, longer trips and more festivities," said Sgt. Melissa Russell. "Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to save your life in a crash. We're asking every driver and passenger to buckle up, every trip, every time — and to make a plan for a sober ride before the celebrations begin. If you drink alcohol or use cannabis, don't drive."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, impaired driving crashes tend to increase around the holiday. From 2019 to 2023, 868 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S. during the Thanksgiving holiday period.
