100 People Have Tested Positive: Tinley Park Coronavirus Updates

Here is the latest on how the new coronavirus is impacting life in Tinley Park.

TINLEY PARK, IL — The spread of the new coronavirus has made an impact on all ways of life across the world, with the impact felt locally in the Chicagoland area, the south suburbs and most specifically Tinley Park.

As of April 21, Tinley Park had 100 confirmed new coronavirus cases, according to a map published by the Cook County Department of Public Health. The map now also shows how many cases each town has per 100,000 residents rather than the total number of confirmed cases. In Tinley Park, that number is 203.

Nearby, Orland Park has 148 confirmed cases, Oak Forest has 64 and Orland Hills has 14. So far, statewide more than 33,000 cases have been counted and more than 1,400 deaths from the COVID-19 disease that's caused by the virus. Gov. J.B. Pritzker said the total of daily cases isn't expected to peak until mid-May.

With CDC guidelines calling for everyone in public to wear a mask for a few weeks now, village officials in Tinley Park were poised on Tuesday to vote to make it a requirement for residents and visitors in the village.

SCHOOLS

Schools in Tinley Park, and throughout Illinois, will be closed to in-person learning for the duration of the 2019-2020 school year.

TESTING

Coronavirus testing is now available in the south suburbs, with the nearest testing location to Tinley Park now open to anyone eligible at the vehicle emissions test site near 159th and Pulaski in Markham. Anyone older than 65 and anyone older than 17 with a pre-existing condition are eligible, as well as any first responder or hospital worker who is showing symptoms.

Antibody testing remains available at ARCpoint Labs nearby in Orland Park.

BUSINESSES

On the local business front, several Tinley Park business owners have shared what they are offering during a time when all "non-essential" businesses have been ordered closed and a number of them have different hours amid the shutdown.

The Odyssey, an elegant event venue off Ridgeland Avenue in Tinley Park, donated 500 meals to first responders and healthcare workers last week. That's one meal per every meal purchased from them on Easter Sunday.

The Tinley Park Public Library has offered its Ancestry.com subscription to be used for free by anyone with a library card.
