Adventure Education Students at VJA Pedal Toward Safety and Confidence
Partnerships with local bike experts bring hands-on safety lessons to students

For the third semester in a row, Victor J. Andrew High School Physical Education students are gaining real-world experience and confidence on two wheels through Adventure Education’s popular biking unit.
The weeklong program, led by Adventure Ed instructors Kevin Wolski and Jen Genslinger, focuses on bike safety, maintenance, and riding skills. Students begin with lessons in bike care and short neighborhood rides, then advance to longer trail rides through the Orland Park Grasslands.
This fall, the program partnered with Still Ride Bike Shop in Tinley Park, which visited the class to talk about bike safety and provide on-the-spot tune-ups and inspections. Last year, students also learned from the Illinois League of Bicyclists, which presented on roadway safety and sharing the road with vehicles.
“Students not only build their fitness, but they also develop lifelong skills in bike safety and responsibility,” said Physical Education Department Chair Doug Bozych.
The Adventure Education program continues to grow in popularity at Andrew High School, giving students a unique way to connect classroom learning with outdoor adventure and practical life skills.
