Andrew High School Junior Killed In NW Indiana Crash

An Andrew High School junior was killed in a two-vehicle accident last week in northwest Indiana, according to a school note sent to parents. Daniel Hammond, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Friday, March 23, in Lake Village, Indiana.

"Daniel was passionate about his involvement in our Chess Program and his relationships with friends here at VJA," the Andrew school note stated.

The accident happened at around 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 and County Road 950 North in Newton County, according to WFLI-TV. Hammond was traveling east on C.R. 950 North when he crossed into the north lanes of U.S. 41, the report added.

Once in the U.S. 41 lanes, Hammond, who was from Tinley Park, was hit by a semi-tractor-tailer heading north, the report stated. He was killed in the crash, and the 47-year-old driver of the semi refused medical treatment at the scene, the report added.

"Andrew High School is family — and thus, we all are impacted in some way by this tragedy. Please lean on each other and keep an let us know if we can assist with anything during this difficult time," the Andrew note stated.

Andrew is currently on spring break.
