'A Big Win': Opening Date Set For Tinley Park's Harmony Square

The multi-use plaza will make its debut July 18. The BoDeans will play a free concert, and the weekend rolls on with the 2-day Block Party.

TINLEY PARK, IL — The massive effort to bring a multi-use plaza and entertainment space to downtown Tinley Park is nearing completion, with a grand opening date now set.

After nearly a decade of planning and more than a year of construction, Village officials will debut Harmony Square, a 1.6-acre multi-use plaza at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and North Street, on Friday, July 18.

The plaza will officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, food and drink vendors, speeches by elected officials, special deals on Village merchandise for residents, and a concert by rock band The BoDeans from 7 to 10 p.m.

“Harmony Square has been a key component of our vision for a first-class downtown for many years now, and it’s exciting to be here as it transitions from a dream to reality,” Mayor Michael Glotz said. “This is something that’s not just huge for Tinley Park—it’s a big win for the entire region. Harmony Square will be a draw, with economic benefits that will extend well beyond our borders.”

The grand opening will be immediately followed with the Village’s annual Block Party, a popular summer event that will run from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 19 and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at the new plaza. Visitors will be able to enjoy live music on two stages, food and drinks for sale, rides and games, and much more.

“Once it’s open, most of our special events will transition to Harmony Square, including Farmers Market and Music in the Plaza, as well as Boo Bash and Holiday Happenings later in the year,” Glotz said.

Harmony Square will also be home to new events throughout the summer and fall such as yoga, an instrument zoo, jumbo games, kids performances, movie nights, and seasonal light shows. Throughout the winter months, there will be an ice-skating rink with curling lanes. Visitors are encouraged to check out www.TinleyPark.org/Parking to see a map of all available parking options near the new plaza.

The new plaza features a reconstruction of Teehan’s, originally built in the 1850s, as its cornerstone, as well as a Durbin’s with a rooftop bar, a concert building with a 30-by-50 ft. stage and backstage, and a VIP building for private parties called Studio 67. Additional amenities include a synthetic turf lawn, a water feature, fire pits, and a gateway pergola.

Harmony Square was designed by the Lakota Group and constructed by R.C. Wegman. While the Village held a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic and a change in leadership delayed construction until April 2024. In addition to the plaza, the Village has plans for an adjacent mixed-use development called West Point at Harmony Square to the east/northeast of the plaza.
