The man gave the salesman a driver's license and two documents from the Social Security Administration, as well as a copy of his earnings statement, police said. The 2009 Toyota Camry he was buying was priced at $16,998. But before finishing the transaction, the man left in his own car, the report said.
" … The subject called on the phone and told (the manager) he had to leave because his wife had an emergency and he would come back to CarMax tomorrow," the report said.
Police looked up the driver's license and didn't find any record attached to the name the man gave. The other documentation also appeared fraudulent, the report said.
CarMax had no loss as of Friday and still had the $500 from the man.
Gym Bag Stolen
Sometime between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., someone stole a gym bag from an unlocked locker at LA Fitness, 18400 Convention Center Drive in Tinley Park. The thief then used the victim's keys to open his Ford F150, in which a black iPhone and $100 cash were hidden. The man's gym bag and clothes were left by the truck, but the money and phone were gone.
