District 228 Psychologist Named 2020 Psychologist Of The Year

TINLEY PARK, IL — Bremen High School District 228 Psychologist, Kelly Eastman, was named the 2020 Psychologist of the Year by the Illinois School Psychologists Association (ISPA). Eastman works at Tinley Park High School, located at 6111 175th St, Tinley Park.

On Jan. 29, at the association's annual convention — held virtually this year — the ISPA recognized Eastman as the recipient of the honor, otherwise known as the Ted Smith Practitioner of the Year Award.

According to ISPA, "School psychologists make important contributions to the social, emotional and academic development of students by serving as advocates for good mental health and safe and supportive learning environments. Working as partners with parents, educators and fellow mental health professionals, school psychologists help students reach optimal levels of achievement and well-being. School psychologists in Illinois have specialized training in child development, mental health, learning theory, motivation, and education."

District 228 Director of Special Education Dr. Lisa Giglio-Byczek nominated Eastman for the award. Over their years of collaboration, Dr. Giglio-Byczek said she has observed Kelly’s passion for helping students find success in school and her commitment to equity and positive mental and emotional health. She nominated Eastman as a way to "celebrate and honor Kelly’s dedication to the field of school psychology, her students, and her willingness to go above and beyond every day."

"It is truly an honor to work in a district and with administration that not only have recognized my efforts, but have also gone above and beyond to show that my work is valued and appreciated," Eastman said. "Thank you to Lisa Giglio Byczek for nominating me for this award, and thank you to all of the administration and staff who wrote letters in support. I look forward to setting the bar higher in order to find more ways to support our students, staff, and community."

Eastman’s nomination was also supported by other D228 colleagues. In the above announcement, the selection committee said it received over eight letters of support, the most they have ever received for a nominee, outlining all the characteristics that set Eastman apart, and scored her the honor.

Eastman is currently in her fifth year as a school psychologist with D228. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Trinity Christian College, and an Education Specialist degree from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
