Accused Drunken Driver: 'I Didn't See Any Lights. What Lights?'

When asked a motorist where he was coming from and where he was going, he answered "Chicago" to both, they said.

Officers said it wasn't easy to stop John E. Tryba, 43, of the 4300 block of North Clarendon Avenue in Chicago, around 12:50 a.m. on April 9, when they saw him swerving all over the roadway near the intersection of 183rd Street and Oak Park Avenue in .

Tryba made no effort to stop after police turned on their sirens, according to the report, nor did he pull over when they began sounding an air horn. It wasn't until a squad car pulled in front of Tryba past the intersection of Pheasant Lake Drive and 183rd Street that police got him to pull over, officers said. 

"I asked the driver why he hadn't pulled over when I activated my emergency lights," an officer wrote in the report. "The driver replied, 'I didn't see any lights. What lights?'" 

Tryba acted very confused when he was told he was swerving, police said. He told them he was coming from Chicago. He also said he was headed there, according to the report. He reportedly admitted to drinking "a couple of beers," but acted confused when officers asked him where he was, they said.

He then failed field sobriety tests, police said. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test at the . He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use.
