Ex-Park Director Appointed To Tinley Park Village Board
John Curran will fill the seat left vacant by Michael Mangin's resignation in May.

TINLEY PARK, IL — John Curran, the former executive director of the Tinley Park-Park District, was appointed Tuesday as a new trustee on the Village Board. He fills the vacancy left by Michael Mangin, who stepped down last month.
Curran, 64, had headed the parks district from 1996 to 2017, and he was the executive director for Alsip's parks district for 16 years before that. He earned his bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University and his associate degree from Triton Junior College.
“Besides being a fabulous resident of Tinley Park, he built the Tinley Park-Park District up to be the world-renown park district that it is," Mayor Jacob Vandenberg said in a statement. "He executed sound fiscal policy [and] directed the board to make some strong decisions to bring the park district to the future. I don’t know many people that can actually complain about the services the park district provides.”

The appointment was prompted by Mangin's resignation in late May. The former Marquette Bank exec had only served on the board for about a year and was appointed to fill the vacancy made when Vandenberg was elected mayor in May 2017.

Mangin had led the finance committee for the board during his brief tenure. That duty will belong to Curran now that his appointment has been formally approved by the Village Board.
Curran's appointment now means that there's an open seat on the Tinley Park Plan Commission. That opening will be filled July 1 when Vanderberg makes appointments for all the village's committees.
