Girl, 5, Dies In Apparent Drowning At Tinley Park-Park District Pool

It is unclear how long the girl was underwater, Tinley Park Fire Chief Steve Klotz said.

TINLEY PARK, IL — A 5-year-old girl died Friday evening in a suspected drowning at a Tinley Park-Park District pool, officials said.

Paramedics were called just before 4 p.m. to White Water Canyon Water Park, 8221 W 171st St. in Tinley Park, for a report of an unresponsive girl pulled from the water. First responders found the 5-year-old in full cardiac arrest, said Tinley Park Fire Chief Steve Klotz.

The child had been under the water for an unknown period of time, Klotz said. Lifeguards attempted to revive the girl using CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator.

The child was not breathing when transported to Silver Cross Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, Klotz said. Her identity has not been publicly released.

Tinley Park-Park District Executive Director Shawn Roby said officials responded to an "aquatic incident" at the pool.

"Lifeguards with the Tinley Park-Park District initiated a water rescue Friday afternoon at White Water Canyon Water Park," said a spokesperson for the Tinley Park-Park District. "Emergency authorities responded, provided additional emergency assistance, and transported the individual to a hospital. No further information is being released at this time out of respect for the family. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and loved ones."

As of 5:30 p.m., the pool was closed to the public, according to residents in the area.
