Grenade Shuts Down Tinley Park Police Department

A Tinley Park resident brought what turned out be a deactivated grenade into the station Thursday night.

The Tinley Park Police Department was shut down for about an hour Thursday night after an authentic-looking grenade was brought into the station.

Cook County's bomb squad determined that the World War II-era grenade had been deactivated before the incident at the station, police said.

An 8-year-old Tinley Park boy discovered the grenade while playing near his grandmother's home in the 17900 block of Sayre Avenue, police said. The boy's mother then brought the explosive device to the station, prompting a call to the bomb squad.

"Our protocol is not to mess with [explosives]," said police Chief Steve Neubauer.

Neubauer is urging residents not to handle found explosives or bring them to the police department. Instead, they should call 911 so that explosives experts can handle the device.
