Here's How Lawmaker Pay in Illinois Compares to Other States

Illinois state legislators make $67,838 per year, plus per diem pay that cover costs like food and transportation while conducting state business. Given the current condition of state government, whether they earn or deserve that pay is debatable.

To put the issue into a broader perspective, we looked at legislator pay in the other 49 states.

Using 2015 data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, we've created a map that shows what lawmakers across the U.S. make in base salary and per diem rates. The amounts vary widely. While a legislator in California makes $97,197 a year in base salary, their counterpart in South Carolina makes $10,400.
