KKK Fliers Left On Tinley Park Lawns Over Weekend

The leaflets had been placed in plastic baggies that were weighted down by aquarium gravel.

TINLEY PARK, IL — Some Tinley Park residents woke up Sunday morning to find recruitment fliers from the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan sitting on their lawns. The fliers — which proclaimed, "White Pride Doesn't Mean Hate — had been placed in plastic baggies, weighted down by aquarium gravel.

One resident, Amber Stahl, found 15 bags along 71st Avenue between 173rd Place and 175th Street. She contacted Tinley Park police about the fliers. According to police, only one person called the department over the handbills.

The leaflets declare that it's not racist for whites to be proud of their race and culture. It ends by encouraging whites to stand up for their rights.

"I was angry that I found them," Stahl said. "I feel like certain groups feel emboldened by our political climate and leadership to say things or be public about racism when in the past they may have hidden it. There is no shame in their racism anymore. I’m not saying these fliers or groups didn’t exist in the past, but I guess with my privilege as a white person I didn’t come across it like I see now."

And Stahl is right; this isn't the first time fliers of this type have been left in Tinley Park. The Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan used the same technique to promote a "neighborhood watch" just before Christmas in 2013.

The number on the fliers left Sunday, July 22, goes to a voicemail asking people to leave a number. The recording also used anti-gay language to discuss an unspecified Indiana church being forced to stop speaking out against homosexuals.

A message with Tinley Park police was not returned immediately.
