Police Blotter: An Inside Job at Shell; Engagement Ring Swiped

What's an iPad?

During interviews about a missing iPad, maids at a local hotel asked police to describe what the device they were referring to was.

A woman staying at the hotel, 18511 North Creek Drive in , said that the iPad was stolen from her room sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. She left it plugged into an outlet, sitting on a table in the room, the report said.

Three maids—one of whom cleaned the room around 12:30 p.m. that day—denied stealing the iPad. All said the "did not know what an iPad is," police said. It was valued at about $600.

Pickpocket at McDonald's

A man called  around 4:20 p.m. when he realized that his wallet was missing from his pocket. The man said he believed the wallet was taken around 10:30 a.m. while he was at McDonald's, 8400 W. 163rd St., Tinley Park. None of his credit cards had been used at the time of the report.

FRIDAY, JAN. 6 

An Inside Job at Shell

Staff at a local gas station called the cops this past week when they noticed money missing from the "cash drop" in the safe for the third month in a row.

In November, $300 was taken from the cash drop at Shell, 17101 S. Harlem Ave., Tinley Park, and in December, $80 was unaccounted for. Sometime between 5 a.m. Jan. 5 and 5 a.m. Jan. 6, a total cash drop of $241.35 was reported missing.

The drop is the amount of cash in the register at the end of a given shift, which is placed directly into the safe. Police interviewed all employees who had worked during the time of the thefts even though none had access to the safe. Only two people at the business can get into the safe and each was interviewed. The case remained under investigation Friday.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 4

Engagement Ring Swiped

A woman living in the 7700 block of West 167th Street in Tinley Park said that sometime between 10:30 p.m. Jan. 3 and 4:30 p.m. Jan. 4, someone stole her 1-carat diamond, marquis cut gold engagement ring. She said she set the ring on an end table while she was watching movies on Jan. 3. She went to work the next day and didn't check to see if the ring was still there. But when she came home, it was gone. She suspects that one of her son's friends may have taken it.

TUESDAY, JAN. 3 

Cash Missing From BK

A staff member at Burker King called the cops after noticing that three bank deposits were missing. The deposits were from Dec. 24, Dec. 26 and Jan. 3 and totaled $2,587.62, according to the police report.

Police interviewed a woman who was recently let go from the restaurant, which is located at 7135 159th St., Tinley Park. She denied any involvement and encouraged officers to watch surveillance footage from the restaurant. They had not yet gotten said footage as of Friday, but planned to soon.
