Police Blotter: Someone Sets Fire to Real Estate Sign; Teens Damage Two Cars

Someone Sets Fire to Real Estate Sign
A real estate agent who had placed a sign on a property in the 8500 block of West Scheer Drive in called police to report that sometime between 5 p.m. Oct. 8 and 7 a.m. Oct. 10, someone started part of it on fire. A container that was attached to the sign was burnt, according to the police report.
SATURDAY, OCT. 9
Teens Damage Two Cars
A man living in the 7400 block of 163rd Street in Tinley Park said that around 9:20 p.m., his daughter heard a noise and looked outside and saw three teenagers running to a small black vehicle parked several houses west. The man said that when he went outside, he found the front and back windows of his green 1999 Inifiniti Q4ST smashed out. A blue 2000 Pontiac Firebird was also damaged—its driver's side and back windows were smashed and a side mirror was damaged.

Missing Wallet
A woman called after she realized that between noon and 1 p.m., she left her wallet at McCarthy Park, 16801 80th Ave., in Tinley Park. Inside was $30 in cash, her driver's license, state identification card and a debit card, according to the report. There were no fraudulent charges made using her debit card as of Saturday at 7 p.m., police said.
FRIDAY, OCT. 8
Bank Account Fraud
A 50-year-old local woman reported that between Sept. 26 and Sept. 30, someone withdrew money from a joint savings account she shares with her son without her or her son's permission. The first transaction was to ComEd for $400.42 and the second was for $3.50 to Billmatrix, according to the report. Two more unauthorized transactions—one to Western Union and the other, Credit One Bank Des—were for $466.45. A fifth transaction to Sprint totalled $160.50. The woman said she did not know anyone by the name of the two people that bank representatives told her had made the transactions. The woman also began receiving denials in the mail for lines of credit she didn't apply for, she said.

Driving Under the Influence
Kevin J. McEnery, 23, of the 16800 block of 81st Avenue in Tinley Park, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence, failure to yield when turning left, operating an uninsured vehicle and driving without a copy of his driver's license. Police pulled him over after they said he cut them off to make a left turn near the intersection of 80th Avenue and Paxton Street. Police said they smelled alcohol on his breath and that McEnery told them he had drank 10 Miller Lites. He refused sobriety tests, according to the report. His bail was set at $3,000.
Debit Card Stolen
A 42-year-old woman called police after her she learned that her debit card was used without her permission at three businesses in Tinley Park—the Speedway on 80th Avenue and the Best Buy and Super Target on 191st Street. She said she believed someone stole her debit card out of her purse while it was in her car. She did not remember whether the doors were locked at that time.

Scratches on Minivan
The owner of a 2010 Dodge Minivan called police when he said he found 16 separate scratches on the passenger side of his vehicle extending from the front passenger door back to the rear passenger-side quarter panel. He said someone could have scratched the car in his driveway on 165th Street in Tinley Park, outside his wife's workplace on 175th Street or in at a local car wash. He said he believed the van was damaged between Oct. 5 and Oct. 7.
Windshield Shattered
The owner of a 1991 Mazda MX5 called police around 10 a.m. to report that sometime overnight, someone smashed his vehicle's front windshield. It was parked in the 16400 block of South Brementowne Road, according to the report. Police said they also found a 5-inch round dent on the vehicle's driver's side. They said the damage may have been caused by a baseball bat.

Backpack Filled With Candy Found
A resident turned in a backpack around 7:45 a.m. that she said was leaning against her home on 164th Place in Tinley Park. It contained miscellaneous papers, candy, change and a gold ring, according to the police report. Police tracked down the man whose paperwork was inside and he said he didn't know how it got in the backpack. Police suspect that he may have been a victim of a theft.

Scratches on a BMW
The owner of a 2005 BMW reported that while parked in a lot in the 8100 block of West 183rd Street in Tinley Park, someone scratched the trunk and passenger side of the vehicle. The woman said she believed someone damaged the BMW between 8 a.m. Sept. 26 and 5 p.m. Oct. 3.

Leaving the Scene
Jose Rios, 25, of the 4100 block of South Archer Avenue in Chicago, was arrested around 11:55 p.m. at his home and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage stemming from a Sept. 30 incident near Harlem Avenue and 171st Street in Tinley Park.
