Hillcrest HS Student Killed In Football Game Shooting, District Says
Police said shots were fired after the Hillcrest-Oak Forest game. A 14-year-old Hazel Crest boy suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, IL — A 14-year-old boy died after being shot near Hillcrest High School Friday night, following the school's homecoming football game against Oak Forest High School.
The teen has been identified as Marshawn Mitchell of Hazel Crest, ABC-7 reports. District 228 confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday morning that Mitchell is a Hillcrest High School student.
“It is with a heavy heart we mourn the devastating loss of one of our Hillcrest High School students,” the district statement reads. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy.”

The shooting took place around 9 p.m. along 175th Street, Bremen District 228 said in an alert to parents, following the game between Hillcrest High School and Oak Forest High School. Police said that they were in the area of the high school, 17401 S. Pulaski Rd., dispersing a group of people when shots were fired.
Police said the shots were fired by an unknown suspect. The victim was taken to a local hospital initially in critical condition, police said. Mitchell suffered multiple gunshot wounds, ABC7 reports. He was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

The Hillcrest High School football program issued a statement via social media.
"We are all saddened by the events that happened tonight after our homecoming football game against Oak Forest," the post read. "There is an active investigation by all the appropriate authorities! We are praying for all involved! Please pray for our staff and students who have been affected by this unfortunate, senseless act of violence!"
District officials canceled Hillcrest High School's homecoming dance, set for Saturday night, school officials said in an alert to parents.
The incident remains an active investigation, police said in a release Saturday.
